Questions about employing in Namibia

What notice and severance apply in Namibia?

Under Namibia's Labour Act, notice is a day in the first four weeks of service, a week up to a year, and a month after that. Severance is at least a week's remuneration for each year of service, once an employee has served twelve months. It is owed on a dismissal, other than a fair one for misconduct or poor performance, on a death in service, and on resigning or retiring at 65.

Can we employ a foreign national?
Yes, with an employment permit. The Immigration Selection Board authorises it where the person is qualified for the work and too few people in Namibia already do it. The Chief of Immigration then issues it.
Is there a training levy?
Yes. Employers paying NAD 1,000,000 or more in a year to their employees pay the vocational education and training levy, at 1% of that year's total pay. It is paid on or before the 20th of each month.
